Symphony No. 1 "Istanbul" for large orchestra and Turkish instruments Some masterpieces do not age. Beethoven's 5th Symphony is one of them: the pounding, concise opening motif of the 1st movement has even become a "trademark" of classical instrumental music. How did this come about? Unlike his contemporaries, Beethoven's work features a continuous emotional development and motivic connection within an entire symphony – thus shaping the dramaturgy of all symphonic works of the 19th century. The composer from Bonn borrowed the drama from French revolutionary music Luigi Cherubini, which is why the audience at the first performance in Paris exclaimed: "That is the Emperor! Long live Napoleon!" The metropolis on the Bosporus also appears eternally young, having changed its name twice in its history and being almost 2700 years old! Fazil Say has composed a symphony about Istanbul, in which the renowned Turkish composer creates a city portrait in seven movements, capturing the vibrant everyday life, rich history, and character of its inhabitants in tones. The stylistic versatility of Say can be heard in this work with a large symphony orchestra and traditional Turkish instruments such as the Ney flute and the Kanun box zither. Elements of symphonic European music are combined with traditional Turkish music and jazz rhythms. Even in this concert season, the entire city population – regardless of the language they speak – is warmly invited as the audience.
