4th Chamber Concert – The Files of Cleopatra

Description

The final chamber concert of this season features the 2025 Schenk Foundation award winner Lia Brandigi. The evening opens with Hildegard von Bingen's «Quia ergo Femina». Besides her reputation as a visionary and universal scholar, she also engaged in composition and wrote a piece celebrating the spiritual power of the feminine. Fanny Hensel impressively demonstrates her compositional skills in the E-flat major string quartet, which long stood in the shadow of her brother Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Claude Debussy's «Syrinx» for solo flute L. 129 tells an ancient myth of the nymph Syrinx, where the flute stands out poetically through the use of its low register and mythical sounds. This is followed by an Amy Beach «Theme and Variations» for flute and string quartet op. 80 inspired by Debussy, shining with contrapuntal sophistication and varied variations. Finally, Fazil Say's «Cleopatra» for solo violin op. 34 is a virtuoso and demanding work that combines modern playing techniques, varied rhythmic designs, and sounds of Arabia. Program:
