The grande dame of the piano, Elisabeth Leonskaja, has been inspiring audiences for decades with her strength, presence, and sensitivity. She regularly performs on all the world's stages. "Such artistic personalities are no longer densely populated," said the Badische Neuesten Nachrichten after her recent appearance in Karlsruhe. Now she dedicates herself to composers who have been close to her heart since her early years. "As students, we were also always invited to play at Shostakovich's home if we wanted. So I was also one of those lucky ones a few times," Leonskaja says in an interview. Thus, she finds the rarely performed 2nd piano sonata by Dmitri Shostakovich an ideal interpreter. She has also been accompanying the works of Frédéric Chopin since her childhood. She has recorded various cycles on CDs. At the concert hall, the wildly virtuosic and at the same time most beautiful poetry-filled Scherzo No. 1 and his 3rd piano sonata, one of the most demanding and moving works of piano literature, will be performed. The program begins with the improvisational piano fantasy op. 77 by Ludwig van Beethoven. For Leonskaja, music is sacred. She feels after a piano evening "so happy and fulfilled, although at the same time completely exhausted. You have given everything, you are empty, but at the same time full. I can't say I'm happy, but I am happy to have breathed in this height." What a blessing to be able to attend these artistic heights now as part of the master concerts!
