Shimmering musician's tale Richly orchestrated and infused with oriental perfume, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's symphonic poem Scheherazade is inspired by the fantastic collection of stories, One Thousand and One Nights. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was inspired by a journey to the wild coasts of Scotland for his Hebrides Overture. You can almost feel the salty spray and the rough wind through the sounds. The rough wind also blew against the British composer Ethel Smyth, but not at the sea, rather from a conservative society that gradually convinced Smyth of her talent. Her concert for violin, horn, and orchestra impresses with powerful logic and a brilliant sense of the sonically surprising possibilities that arise from the unusual combination of these two solo instruments.
