Philipp Schmidlin, choir rehearsal It is not always the word that carries drama, action or theater within itself, music can also take on this task. Thus in the film music to «Hamlet» by Dmitri Shostakovich, which gives the eponymous Russian Shakespeare film the expressive power that language alone could not achieve. Camille Saint-Saëns also conceives his first cello concerto from the perspective of drama: The solo instrument leads through a continuous movement like through an action with three acts. This leading role is taken by the young cellist from Central Switzerland Emilie Richter. In the stage music to «A Midsummer Night's Dream» by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Shakespeare appears in a completely different way than in Shostakovich: Light, transparent and full of contrasts, a world of fairy magic, festivity and dream worlds unfolds. None other than the famous Swiss theater and film actor Stefan Kurt leads as speaker through the «Midsummer Night's Dream». The concert is conducted by the Swiss guest conductor Simon Gaudenz.
