Matthias Helm, bass “Jauchzet, frohlocket” is the message with which Bach opened his world-famous Christmas Oratorio nearly 300 years ago. Rejoicing and exulting continue today: Bach's famous melodies belong in concerts before Christmas like gifts under the Christmas tree. Each of the six cantatas was composed by Bach for a different feast day; today selected cantatas are performed together in concert. Not all of it is new music: Bach upcycles many of his already existing melodies for the oratorio, for example a birthday melody for the Polish queen Maria Josepha. With the Zuger Choir Audite Nova and under the direction of chief conductor Daniel Huppert, the Zuger Sinfonietta also ushers in the Christmas season with the first four cantatas from Bach's work, aiming to delight the audience with its variety and festivity even after hundreds of years of music history.
