Signs of the Times

Description

Displayed are 1,111 drawings from the archive of children's and youth drawings of the Pestalozzianum Foundation, a curated selection from an impressive collection of now around 70,000 drawings, silhouettes, and prints. What began in 1932 in the context of the reform movement "Neue Zeichnung" has developed into one of the most significant collections of its kind. The exhibits span from the late 19th century to the present day. The question of whether what is shown can be considered art takes a backseat here in favor of childlike immediacy. For a child, this question does not arise when drawing; they create spontaneously. What matters is the content: the unfiltered view of the world. The exhibition is a window into past and present realities. We see the father in his workshop, the sister playing, or dedication to a favorite hobby. But also the major upheavals of history leave their marks. For example, poignant testimonies of World War II are found right next to everyday scenes. This view of children through the decades is sometimes beautified and full of imagination, sometimes disturbingly honest and direct. It is a journey through time that not only shows what was drawn but also how. The change in strokes, colors, and techniques over generations makes the passage of time physically tangible. "Signs of the Times" offers no ready-made interpretive framework. Instead, each visitor is invited to immerse themselves individually in this flood of images, discover similarities, and form their own impression of how we see and record the world.
