Yes Don't Panic! is a democratic conducting concept by Marc Jenny for improvising musicians and their audience. Participants send each other performance instructions via tablets; the audience can also influence the musical proceedings with their own smartphones. The set of instructions used forms an open array of musical possibilities: dynamics, rhythm, timbre, pitch, density, pauses, playing positions, composed fragments, or entire improvisation concepts can stand out individually, be combined, or be played against each other. What happens when a parameter suddenly becomes central? How does a familiar sound change through an unexpected instruction? And what occurs when a musical expectation is aroused but not fulfilled? Since the musicians interpret each instruction individually, the result remains unpredictable. In the interplay between directing and reacting, intention and chance, expectation and surprise, multi-layered sound worlds and idiosyncratic dramaturgies emerge. Yes Don't Panic! makes musical decisions immediately tangible: as participatory instant composing with a sense of risk, humor, and a pinch of madness.
