Yael Inokai and Johanna Sebauer

Description

YAEL INOKAI AND JOHANNA SEBAUER
read from their new novels »Die Auster« and »Popóm« It is often coincidences that turn one's life upside down and give it a new direction. The characters in Yael Inokai's and Johanna Sebauer's new novels also experience this. In »Die Auster« (Hanser Berlin), the cleaning lady Leonora Bloch is drawn into a criminal case. Her employer, Dr. Bronstedt, head of a luxury department store, is found murdered in his villa. Leonora is the first at the crime scene – and dutifully removes the blood traces. Inokai sharply and melancholically explores the precarious life in Berlin, loneliness, and the search for belonging »in the off of a crime novel«. Hendrik Popom, Sebauer's main character in »Popóm« (DuMont), just wants to buy something briefly at the kiosk. Then the unthinkable happens: he encounters himself. The entertaining reinterpretation of the doppelgänger motif and Hendrik's helpless search for answers are followed with anticipation: »Meeting oneself possible?, googled I, and Can I exist in other person?« Yael Inokai's »A simple intervention« was awarded the Anna Seghers Prize in 2022 and the Clemens Brentano Prize in 2023. With »Die Auster«, she is nominated for the Swiss Book Prize. Johanna Sebauer, who has lived in Hamburg for many years, received the 3sat Prize and the Audience Award for »Das Gurkerl« at the Bachmann Competition 2024. »Popóm« is her second novel.
