Description

Giacomo Puccini sometimes gave his operas a cinematic pull, Charlie Chaplin skillfully played with operatic gestures in his films. Both were early global superstars of their craft, border-crossers, uncompromising perfectionists, and masters of great emotions – laughter and tears. Their characteristic characters such as vagrants, Bohemians, or gold prospectors, as well as the fateful portrayals of women, are inspired by the social reality of early modernity. Through their work, which brought great wealth, they both became enthusiastic about luxury, progress, and new beginnings. The workshop series invites you to compare selected works by Puccini and Chaplin, deepen them in the context of their time of origin, and rediscover opera and film. December 2, 2026, January 13, February 10, March 3 / 24, 2027, each from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM. Rehearsal visits: December 8, 2026, February 18, 2027. Performance visit «Tosca»: April 14, 2027. CHF 75 (for participants up to 30 years, the performance visit is included)

General Information

The workshop series invites young people from 16 years old to compare the works of Giacomo Puccini and Charlie Chaplin. It takes place at the Zurich Opera House and offers a deeper engagement with the social realities of early modernity.
