Description

Academic freedom allows researchers at universities to make scientific statements in research and teaching that may offend religious feelings, expose ideological blind spots, threaten economic interests, or weaken political power structures. It is granted because liberal democracies see scientific progress as a common good that should not be restricted by beliefs, ideologies, or particular interests. Recently, academic freedom has come under pressure in various countries, most spectacularly in the USA. Therefore, it is worthwhile to examine its history more closely. Not least in Switzerland, because our country plays a pioneering role in the history of academic freedom, which has not yet been widely recognized.
