Description
Claire Denis often explores those things that hold the world together at its core: violence and passion, dream and memory, everyday life and routine, foreignness and tenderness. In White Material, she follows the dissolution of a coffee plantation amidst the chaos of an African civil war. The workers flee, the owner (Isabelle Huppert) tries to organize new workers in the village to harvest the crop, the husband wants to save his skin through deals with the mayor and his militias, the father is gravely ill, and the adult son is no help either because he is already on his own trip. But relationships in Denis's films are never easy to decipher because you have to interpret them yourself. The fascination comes from the fact that the characters never vie for attention but reveal only as much as you are willing to invest in your encounter with them. You move through their world on equal footing, initially tentative, then curious, until you eventually become captivated. (...) The way Claire Denis's gaze is so precise and benevolent is already evident in how rarely you see Isabelle Huppert like this.
