Under the title I Need This Life, Werner Lutz published his first collection of poems in 1979. He was then nearly 50 years old and earned his living as a graphic artist and artist in Basel. The few poems he published as a young man in renowned German magazines attracted a lot of attention. But Lutz took his time, had high standards for himself. Growing up in the Appenzeller hills, he early on befriended nature. It was closer to him and his poems than people. The fleeting interested him, he avoided loud sounds. In short and concise observations, he pursued the inconspicuous things and condensed them into images and reflections. Melancholy and silence characterize this poetry no less than wit and exuberance. As if by the way and quite naturally, each poem opens a poetic, multi-meaning space. The evening offers a portrait of the word and image artist born in the Appenzeller Vorderland, who died ten years ago. Werner Lutz was born in 1930 in Wolfhalden AR. After training as a graphic artist in St. Gallen, he worked in an advertising studio in Basel. He began to write, later also to paint and draw. Important literary prizes and an eight-volume edition of his works, as well as numerous exhibitions, testify to the success of the modest artist. He lived in Basel until his death in 2016. Martina Kuoni works as an event organizer, moderator, and literary mediator in Basel. An event in collaboration with the Cantonal Library of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. Book table and aperitif.
