Christmas Oratorio | Camille Saint-Saëns

Description

With a fine sense of timbre, Saint-Saëns combines solo voices, choir, and orchestra in his oratorio into a transparent, almost floating overall sound. Unlike many large-scale Christmas works, this piece does not rely on monumental effects but on intimacy and sincerity. It is precisely this restraint that gives the music its special expressive power. The composition was created in 1858 and impresses to this day with its elegant melody and gentle, almost meditative mood. Harp sounds and delicate string passages open a musical space that does not dramatically tell the Christmas story but rather contemplates it. The concert promises reflection and musical finesse. Choir and soloists lead through a sound world that offers calm and at the same time deeply moves. Those who engage with this work experience Christmas in perhaps its most poetic form – quiet, bathed in light, and of timeless beauty. Traditionally, the concerts of the Stefanschor always include a part where the audience is invited to join in singing well-known and suitable songs together with the choir and orchestra. Furthermore, the wonderful church with its acoustics offers further musical surprises, and there are thematic impulses from conductor Nicolas Borner and pastor Edwin Stier.
