Why does the Nightingale Sing? Insights from the Petite Camargue

Male birds sing to attract females and to keep male competitors away. There is little evidence to suggest that the nightingale is only interested in the joy of singing – but why doesn't it stick to the usual working hours? In the outskirts of Basel, in the Petite Camargue Alsacienne, there is one of the densest populations of nightingales in the Swiss catchment area. At the local research station, studies have been conducted for many years on when, how, and for whom the nightingale sings. Valentin Amrhein provides insights into the biology of bird song and practical conservation research in the Petite Camargue.
