Adrian Birrer from Bülach discovers sailing at 60 – and seven years later wins the toughest amateur round-the-world sailing race, the “Clipper Round The World Yacht Race.” After crossing 45,000 nautical miles, six oceans, six continents, the equator twice, and the date line once, his team wins the regatta. Eleven months under extreme conditions shape an adventure ranging from survival in storms to deep team spirit. As a career changer, Birrer becomes a round-the-world sailor and race champion, then writes a 400-page book: emotional, authentic, and vivid. His motto as a sailmaker, “Love your Sails,” becomes the philosophy on board. Hard and dangerous work, team challenges, but also omens and the supernatural shape everyday life at sea. Eleven months in close quarters with strangers: this is not a vacation, this is survival. “You wake up soaking wet – and the day is just beginning,” says Birrer. What starts as an adventure quickly becomes a test of limits. Day and night in shifts, navigating in storms, trusting in blind flight.
