Description
How are weather forecasts created, what can we expect from them, and where are their current limits? The lecture will introduce traditional numerical weather prediction, its refinement through statistical methods, as well as interpretation and communication by meteorologists, illustrated with practical examples. The possibilities and limitations of modern weather forecasts will be explained. The role of meteorologists in the age of automation and artificial intelligence will be discussed and presented using the example of the forecast process of MeteoSchweiz. Marco Stoll is 46, a graduate geographer (University of Bern), and has been working since 2005 at the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSchweiz) as a forecaster and trainer.
