Is a miracle material – lightweight, versatile, inexpensive – turning into a curse we can't escape? Plastic waste and microplastics are considered one of the major new environmental problems. They affect us all and will concern us even more in the future. The longer plastic remains in the environment, the smaller and less noticeable the particles become as they break down. This increases the risk of them being ingested by organisms.
But: What do we really know about the spread of microplastics in our environment and waters – and about the effects on plants and animals?
Based on her years of research on microplastics in the Rhine and other ecosystems, the speaker explores these questions. She provides a clearer picture of the facts – and the open questions.
