Linard Candreia: Back to Marmorera About the short life of the emigrant and seasonal worker Flurin Lozza (1870–1919) and his time
Already at sixteen years old, Flurin Lozza from Marmorera becomes an emigrant: Like many people from Graubünden around the penultimate turn of the century, he finds hardly any work and wages outside the valley and the canton, first moves to Spain, then to France. There he works his way up in the hospitality industry, becomes a waiter and dreams of his own café – but success eludes him. He is repeatedly exploited and harassed, loses his jobs, is unemployed and sick, returns home for a while each time until family disputes, village narrowness and financial hardship drive him away again. Finally, he marries a local woman and settles down, but the struggle to support the growing family does not end.
The basis of the book are the meticulously kept diaries left by Flurin Lozza. Linard Candreia quotes from them and enriches the records with anecdotes and historical reminiscences – thus creating a biographical-historical mosaic about the fate of a Graubünden “guest worker”.
Linard Candreia, raised in Casti, now lives in Laufen BL, where he taught history, German, French and Italian as a secondary school teacher. He writes in the Romansh idioms Surmiran and Sursilvan as well as in German – including short stories, columns and the “Impuls” for Radio Rumantsch. For his literary work, he was awarded the Recognition Prize of the Canton of Graubünden.
