Vorstädter-Chilbi

Description

As early as the Saturday before the Chilbi, there is a lively bustle in the suburbs, known as the “Mindere Stadt.” This is the day of the Brotherhood’s marshal, who is responsible for preparing for the suburbs’ most important festivities. Members of the brotherhood, known as the “Buechlisteller,” decorate the suburbs with beech branches from the Solothurn city forest. The Dornacherbrunnen fountain is festively decorated, and the suburbs are adorned with flags. These are also mounted on the bridges, though only up to the middle. This signals that it is a festival of the “Lesser City” and that the “Greater City” has no say in the suburbs on these two days. At exactly 7:00 a. m. on the morning of the fair, the gunners perform their duty by firing 11 salutes from the brotherhood’s cannon. Eleven, because this is Solothurn’s sacred number. After the eleventh shot, the Chilbi March rings out, performed by the Konkordia Solothurn brass band, which has been the Brotherhood’s honorary association since 1920. The band then delights the brothers, sisters, and guests in attendance with a short serenade. In keeping with tradition, the band then plays for the patients and staff at the Bürgerspital Solothurn.
