From Seedling to New Variety - Tour at Sativa in Rheinau

In the historic town of Rheinau, organic seeds of vegetables, herbs, and flowers have been propagated and bred since 1998. It started small in the old monastery garden of the former Benedictine monastery, and since then, Sativa Rheinau AG has developed into one of the leading European organic seed producers.
During the tour, we first gain insight into the elaborate processes of seed propagation and the breeding of new vegetable varieties for organic farming in the nursery. Also to be seen is the processing of a variety of seeds with special machines. The new wooden operational building at Klosterplatz combines the latest storage technology with successful aesthetics and integration into the historic surroundings of the monastery. Besides storage, we see there how the seeds are filled and the quality is checked.
Seed is the basis of all nutrition, and with the claim to produce ecologically and sustainably, Sativa Rheinau AG is also in the tension field of agricultural policy and advancing monopolization. The tour starts at 10:30 am at the Sativa nursery, Alleestrasse 101, 8462 Rheinau.
Arrival by public transport: Bus from Marthalen to Rheinau Galgenbuck stop, 10 minutes walk to the nursery. After about 1 hour, it goes to the operational building 2 km away at Klosterplatz, 20 minutes walk or 5 minutes by car.
