Description
With Josquin the Undead, one of the internationally most significant early music vocal ensembles opens the series Vocal Parallels. Graindelavoix and its artistic director Björn Schmelzer have significantly shaped the performance practice of early music with their unmistakable sound language and their uncompromising approach to historical scores. The program centers around the 1545 septiesme livre de chansons published by Tielman Susato in Antwerp. Published twenty-four years after Josquin Desprez's death, this volume is dedicated solely to his music — an extraordinary document of musical remembrance in the 16th century. Late chansons by Josquin such as Nymphes des bois, Faulte d’argent, and Baisiez moy are contrasted with mourning motets by his contemporaries, including Gomberts Musae Jovis. Quotes move from work to work, motifs return transformed, compositions seem to remember each other. Powerlessness, love failures, melancholy, and death form the inner horizon of a music in which memory itself becomes musical form. Josquin the Undead is one of Graindelavoix's outstanding programs. The same-named recording was awarded the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik in 2022.
