Vincent Courtois & Colin Vallon

Description

«A Simple Fall» brings together the French cellist Vincent Courtois and the Swiss pianist Colin Vallon. The album merges contemporary minimalism with jazz and classical influences. Born out of personal loss, it explores silence, tension, and lyricism over twelve intimate pieces – a deeply human dialogue between cello and piano. The shadow of grief lends the album a restless depth, with its music often hovering between silence and turbulence. Therefore, the album is overshadowed by an relentless confrontation with absence. Every phrase is carefully crafted, every pause deliberately chosen. The raw sounds of the cello and the muted tone of the piano create a fragile architecture that is never ornamental but always essential. This austerity amplifies the underlying emotions: resignation, tenderness, and resilience. Through the repetition of techniques and preparations, Courtois and Vallon have endowed this intimate ensemble with a completely original orchestral dimension: the piano sometimes transforms into a glass harmonium, sometimes into a music box, into a Yangqin or a Viola da Gamba, while the cello also acts as a percussion instrument, harmony instrument, and melody instrument.
