Description

English choral music from the 16th to 21st centuries. Works by Henry Purcell, William Byrd, Edward Elgar, Charles V. Stanford, and others. Conducted by Bernhard Pfammatter. Organ: Hans Christoph Bünger. Vocal ensemble NOVANTIQUA Bern. Most of our concert program consists of music written for the Anglican Church of England. After separating from the Roman Church, it adopted certain forms of the old liturgy, while others were further developed, such as the early evening Evensong, a mixture of Vespers and Compline, sung daily for half a millennium. These services each include the two hymns Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, which, alongside sung psalms and prayers, responses, motets, and congregational singing, form the framework of every Evensong. From the Tudor Renaissance to the present day, the following composers will be represented in this year's program: Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, Thomas T. Noble, Herbert Howells, Caroline Shaw, Henry Purcell, William Byrd, James MacMillan, Charles V. Stanford, Edward Elgar.
