Description

YDLZÜÜG (flksngs_e) is UMS’nJIP’s second program featuring original arrangements of folk songs from the various valleys of the German-speaking Upper Valais and the neighboring Walser valleys. All are embedded in electronic ambiances. Asymmetrical beats, surprising harmonic twists, acoustic yet earthy arrangements alternate in dense succession, revealing unexpected facets of songs in the most archaic German dialects—far from nostalgic homeland sentiments. Imaginatively and subtly, they process their musical roots and create a humorous yet reflective and socially critical bridge to our crazy times with their ethereal songs. An important key to understanding musical identities is to present and make them accessible with contemporary means. Intercultural competence is directly linked to a differentiated knowledge of one's own culture. JIP, who conducts the Upper Valais Folk Song Choir among other roles, was also active from 2009 to 2018 for the Valais UNESCO Committee on the documentation of intangible cultural heritage, where he presented the first overview of the sources related to folk songs in the Upper Valais in 2015. UMS’nJIP (Ulrike Mayer-Spohn and Javier Hagen) are among the most active ensembles for contemporary new music, with over 300 commissioned works and 1600 concerts in 40 countries, as well as 35 international awards, performing everywhere from the Liceu Barcelona, Steghi Athens, Alexandrinsky St. Petersburg, CRT Istanbul, Palacio de Bellas Artes Mexico City, Colón Buenos Aires, to the Shanghai New Music Week, Biennale Venice, and Binn/VS. In 2022, they established a space for contemporary music with the MEbU (Münster Earport) near the Rhône Glacier.
