Earthy, surprising, delicate, and atmospheric, UMS'nJIP processes musical roots — they are based in Münster im Goms — and with their quirky songs, they build a humorous yet reflective and critical bridge to our crazy times. Complementing this winking-critical program, there is also a song-learning website: Volchsliädär leeru und schi deheimu in er Famili singu. This is a project that UMS’nJIP launched in 2020 to stimulate the singing of local folk songs at home. On this website, Upper Valais folk songs are prepared in their original form specifically for home use. The practical learning aids for families, schools, and associations are publicly accessible and also include biographical notes on the composers and poets. Additionally, the song lyrics with the corresponding links are also downloadable as PDFs. Intercultural competence begins with a nuanced understanding of one’s own culture. An important key to understanding musical identities is to present and make them accessible with contemporary means. JIP, who conducts the Upper Valais folk song choir, was active from 2009-2018 for the Valais UNESCO Committee on the documentation of intangible cultural heritage, where he presented the first overview of the sources related to folk songs in Upper Valais in 2015. In parallel, they run the Forum Wallis festival for new music through IGNM-VS and participate in various international committees, including the nomination committee for the Kyoto Prize for Music in Japan. In 2022, they settled in Goms and founded an art space for contemporary music near the Rhone Glacier.
