It is questionable whether among the pioneers of the first British punk wave there is still someone as active in the present as TV Smith. His band The Adverts was considered one of the most important groups of the scene from 1976 to 1979 and had a genuine hit with "Gary Gilmore’s Eyes." While many of the protagonists from that time have fallen by the wayside over the years or now only manage their old songs, TV Smith has kept going. With his always politically charged art, he is perhaps more important today than ever. Since the 90s, mainly on solo paths, he reliably releases his remarkable and relevant albums at regular intervals. He can count on a dedicated worldwide fan base, which by no means consists only of remaining punk veterans. Rather, it seems to become known in each new generation sooner or later that this tireless, unique Englishman travels the world, this punk poet with excellent, equally lyrical and critical lyrics. Known for the straightforward energy of his live performances, TV Smith often plays over 100 concerts annually in various, mostly European countries — unless a pandemic intervenes. Increasingly, TV Smith presents his pieces in the mode of the classic singer-songwriter, accompanied only by his own acoustic guitar. However, this does not mean that he has become calmer or more conciliatory. On the contrary, his often angry, yet always hopeful lyrics about the fundamental social injustices in the United Kingdom gain even more intensity with sparse instrumentation. TV Smith sings about a society that has been deeply divided since Brexit and whose social system was already crumbling before Corona. He mostly does this from the perspective of the working class, which he has always given a voice to. It is the voice of the underprivileged, the seemingly powerless, against the privileged, the powerful.
