Description
Coco Schumann (1924-2018): "I was a musician who was in a concentration camp, not a concentration camp inmate making music." The story of Coco Schumann and his music is moving. As early as the late 1930s, he played swing in clubs in Berlin until he was betrayed in late 1943 and deported to Theresienstadt. Here he became a member of the "Ghetto Swingers," who gained sad notoriety under the Nazi regime. In 1944 he was sent to Auschwitz and in 1945 to Dachau. Back in Berlin, he crafted a pickup from old Wehrmacht radio equipment, making him the first German electric guitarist. He performed on stage into old age, and his life was portrayed in the musical "Der Ghettp-Swinger." Alexander Kranich, a young German jazz guitarist, combines modern jazz, swing, and contemporary sound language in his playing. He accompanied Coco Schumann in his final years. He has transcribed and recorded Coco's pieces anew and plays them today on Coco's original guitar from 1947. The Kranich Collective brings Coco's moving story to the stage at Casino Bern for a good cause. The proceeds will go to Kinderhospiz Allani in Bern-Riedbach, which supports and accompanies seriously ill children and their families.
