To say that Thee Sinseers play oldies would be a mischaracterization. Led by bandleader and son of East Los Angeles, Joey Quinones, the group has quietly honed the sounds of R&B and soul since their formation in 2019. Quinones and his crew have continuously created a distinctive atmosphere that explores all facets of a timeless genre, uniting their interpretation of the music through an unmistakably modern lens.
In a conversation with Thee Sinseers ahead of their new release on Colemine Records, "Love Stories" (coming out on September 18), one thing becomes clear: this is not an album that tells a smooth and tidy love story. The vision of love conveyed on this record is multifaceted. Think of the groundbreaking East LA film "Blood In Blood Out" from 1993 – three protagonists connected through hardship, conflict, and different paths, ultimately returning to confront why they stay together. Here, it’s a similar story. "Love Stories" is not concerned with the happy ending. It cares about everything that comes before, after, and despite it all. One thing remains constant: Thee Sinseers' commitment to their roots. This East LA identity is not prominently displayed – it simply exists, woven into the fabric of the music without being flaunted as a badge. As Francisco Flores puts it: "We come from here. You can hear it from a thousand miles away. You can’t deny it – but we’re not trying to. It just comes through." Nowhere is this clearer than in "Minute by Minute," which Quiñones describes as the moment of the album that feels most like neighborhood – a slow dance song that conjures the gymnasiums of Roosevelt and Garfield High, intimate and leisurely, like a memory you didn’t know you were creating. There’s no feigned heartbreak here, just the real thing.
Like an unsent love letter finally delivered, "Love Stories" carries the weight of everything felt but never quite spoken. The universality of this feeling might best be described in Quiñones’ own words: "It’s never too late to change. It’s never too late to tell a loved one that you love them." After every song on this album, Eric Johnson says, there’s really only one appropriate reaction. "Damn." The band is supported by Eric McEntee.
The Californian singer-songwriter Eric McEntee is a modern troubadour, a soul of the open road, writing timeless songs like the viral hit "I’m Not Bothered By The Rain," which he composed while busking in Paris and filming a movie. McEntee’s music has a unique character that is not tied to a specific era and evokes wanderlust. He continues the tradition of American roots music by blending diverse influences from folk, country, soul, and jazz. True to the roots of his sound, he has collaborated with members of Bob Dylan, Mavis Staples, and Spoon, as well as Grammy-winning producers from Daptone Records, and has recorded albums. After the show, there will be a DJ set by Sonoflono.
Known as the founder of the cult DJ collectives The Muddy River Ya Yas and The Raunchy Rawhide Chicken, inventor of the REC-O-GNIZER (a device for projecting record labels in real-time), DJ Sonoflono has been active for 20 years with events like SUPERGUMBO, SPIRITUS LUX!, or DOWN IN DIDDY WAH DIDDY.
Repertoire: from the late 50s to the early 70s, everything with a beat, soul, and a beautiful label will be played.
