What characterizes gospel?
A typical feature of gospel singing is antiphony, the call-and-response between lead singer and choir. Another African-influenced element of gospel music is the distinctive African tonality. It is characterized by the pentatonic scale, which uses only five tones, in contrast to the seven-tone system of European music. Later, the seven-tone heptatonic scale also emerged in African American music, incorporating the third and seventh, known as "blue notes." These intervals still distinguish African and African American music from European major-minor modalities. A final special feature, attributable to the African roots of Negro spirituals, is the "timbre," the unique tone color of the voice in African singing. Singers develop a range of differentiation possibilities for individual tones, primarily to express their personal mood. This results in tones that can sound rough and fiery, even to the point of an unrefined scream, or pleasantly soft and delicate to the ear.
