Jack Worthing leads a double life: In the countryside, he is known as a respectable guardian who strictly adheres to societal norms. In London, however, he assumes the identity of his supposed brother 'Earnest' to escape the mundane and live freely. His friend Algernon plays the same game – he escapes the city to pose as his invented friend Bunbury in the countryside. So far, so good, if only Jack didn't fall in love with Gwendolen and Algernon with Cecily... – for now, the intricate game of identities is thrown off balance. Both women are determined to marry only a man named 'Earnest.' And when Gwendolen's resolute mother, Lady Bracknell, enters the scene and Jack's highly unusual origins come to light, chaos ensues. OSCAR WILDE (1854–1900) was one of the first dandies, eloquently and flamboyantly exposing the prudery of Victorian society. He celebrated the beautiful, wild, and queer life, for which he was ultimately sentenced to two years in prison and soon after died impoverished and ill in Paris.
