That THE HAUNTED YOUTH name their new album “Boys Cry Too” is, of course, a nod to “Boys Don’t Cry” by The Cure, who made whining an aesthetic style principle like hardly any other band. The young Belgians around singer and guitarist Joachim Liebens also defy the manosphere and bathe in that bittersweet sadness that was classified as Goth in the early eighties and later experienced many reincarnations as shoegaze, dreampop, or indie rock. Currently, The Haunted Youth are also riding high on the crest of melancholy. They channel their electric guitars through long chains of effect devices before their sound flows out of the amplifier towers as a powerful storm surge and merges with cool keyboard mists from the valley of tears. And like a lighthouse over the storm-tossed coast, Liebens' singing safely guides us through the surf to shore. There stands an old house on a cliff, moss-covered roof, a candle flickers in the window.
