One of the most beautiful stories ever written, a classic of Italian literature, a masterful tale, Fred Uhlman’s *The Friend Rediscovered* is the story of a great friendship “of the heart” put to the test by racial laws, of a perfect and magical bond in an Austria witnessing Hitler’s unstoppable rise. The young son of a Jewish doctor and the scion of an Aryan aristocratic family sympathetic to the Nazis—and their story crushed by History with a capital H; the birth of a bond that, despite differences in class, character, and culture, will profoundly transform and irrevocably mark the two protagonists. Adolescent friendship (which endures beyond time or the mistakes we all make), the weight of social differences, the senselessness of racial discrimination, the courage to make difficult choices, and the horror of war and the Nazi regime.
