Description

The Czech music scene is alternately crossed by a metaphorical stagecoach seemingly cut from a film western, and at other times a military jeep. In both cases, the crew and passengers are the same modern country band - TAXMENI. Over more than three decades of existence, they have earned a prominent place in the country scene. They first made a significant impact at the turn of the 60s and 70s of the twentieth century. Initially, they began to create their repertoire based on the singable melodies of traditional American country music, gradually developing their own compositions and expression to modern country, even enriching the entire C&W genre with a specific style known as military-country. The album Calamity Jane 4-Rytíři oblak (2004) consists exclusively of Czech melodies, lyrics, and arrangements. TAXMENI was founded in the autumn of 1970 by former members of the bands The Plainsmen and Stonewall-Jackson. They first performed publicly in February 1971. In this initial period, the band operated on the border of folk and bluegrass. They won several amateur competitions and festivals, including the national final of PORTA. Subsequently, TAXMENI was awarded the so-called Golden Porta for their long-term contribution to Czech country music. Like other leading music groups, TAXMENI were also officially forced to change their original name. They began performing under the name Krajánci. When ideological pressure from the authorities began to intensify, they suspended their musical activities in 1979. They practically resumed performing only in the second half of the 1980s, when the political climate began to gradually relax. A part of the membership was rejuvenated, and Krajánci returned to their name TAXMENI. From their original traditional direction and acoustic sound, they gradually worked towards a more modern interpretation. They have released a whole series of music recordings, among which they achieved extraordinary success with the CALAMITY JANE album series. Here, they introduced and later became famous for their expression and style, which they named "military country". The repertoire of TAXMENI is rich and diverse. They have set to music stories about patriotism, courage, manly honor, and moral principles. In their lyrics, one can find not only classic western themes but also stories of Czechoslovak legionnaires and soldiers during World War II. TAXMENI has performed more than two and a half thousand times. They have played several times abroad, achieving great success in Poland and Slovakia. The colorful journey of TAXMENI, their roots, rise to listener popularity, and the path to the laurels they have achieved, including the history of Czechoslovak country music, is detailed in Jaroslav Čvančara's book "Taxmeni aneb Hledání country grálu". TAXMENI humorously paraphrase the term "tax collector" in their name, but instead of "taking," TAXMENI rather "give": nice songs and good entertainment.
