Description

Jukeboxes haven’t just started moving us today: gramophones, jukeboxes, and orchestrions have time and again been the driving force behind new dance trends and a break with tradition. They foster exuberance, a break from everyday life, and a sense of belonging—even in Switzerland. When musical automata play the Charleston, the jive, and rock ’n’ roll, we move through local histories. Join the dance! Let the automata move you! A boom in the early 20th century:
Phonographs and gramophones made music accessible to everyone. In the 1920s, the Charleston, foxtrot, and jazz shattered rigid traditions with their relaxed fashion and fast-paced steps. Orchestrions in Swiss taverns:
All it took was a coin, and entire mechanical orchestras provided an affordable “live” atmosphere in taverns—without a band. Rock ’n’ Roll & Jukeboxes:
After 1945, American jukeboxes brought rebellion and a new zest for life to Europe. Youth subcultures like Zurich’s “Halbstarken” celebrated freedom in leather jackets. Swiss Jukebox Pioneers:
Local ingenuity helped shape the design—from style icons for Wurlitzer to futuristic models like the “Chantal” from Murten, right up to local hits. Interactive Highlight:
At the interactive Twist Station, you set the beat yourself: Choose your favorite song and get the whole room dancing with just your own moves! Experience history up close!
Let yourself be swept away by the rousing rhythms of past decades and immerse yourself in our special exhibition. Visit us at the Museum of Musical Automata, try out the Twist Station, and discover the sound machines that got Switzerland dancing. We look forward to your visit! Also ideal as a group experience!
