The Lens Art Center and the Orient-Occident Encounters invite Vanessa Lacaille and Mounir Ayoub to discuss architecture and the environment. Having a roof, shelter, a home, a living environment that contributes to our individual well-being but also to the collective well-being of human beings, in respect of nature... a need that seems legitimate but is by no means obvious. Today's architecture faces many major challenges. Climate issues with problems caused by global warming, ecological issues including the question of reusable or scarce materials, and social and political issues such as rebuilding in war zones or the problem of insufficient housing, these questions are challenges for our current societies, both in the West and in the East. "There can be no architecture without inhabitants." This statement by Vanessa Lacaille and Mounir Ayoub might seem obvious at first glance. But "with the commercialization of building production processes, especially housing, it has become a consumer product and the inhabitants have turned into consumers. anonymous?" The two founders of LA (the architecture laboratory) have chosen to incorporate people and their living context into their approach, notably with their award-winning project Bled el Abar, an initiative aimed at restoring water points in the Tunisian Sahara in collaboration with local inhabitants, relying on existing resources. Its goal is to preserve life - human and non-human - in the desert. Vanessa Lacaille studied architecture in Paris and Eindhoven. After a master's degree in 2007, she continued her studies at the Versailles Landscape School where she obtained a second master's in theories and approaches to landscape projects in 2010. Mounir Ayoub studied architecture in Tunis, Paris, and Mendrisio. After a master's degree in 2006, he continued his training at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris. From 2015 to 2020, he was an editor at the journal Tracés.
