The Stoss pilgrimage takes place annually on the second or third Maisonntag. It commemorates the Battle of Stoss in 1405, when the people of Appenzell managed to assert themselves against the rule of the Abbey of St. Gallen after prolonged efforts for liberation. The route from the parish church of Appenzell to the battlefield at Stoss is traveled in prayer, and the return is by the Appenzeller trains. General Information
