Sona Jobarteh is Africa's first female Griot-Kora virtuoso, singer, and composer, who combines Griot tradition with blues and Afropop and uses music as a form of social engagement for future generations. Sona Jobarteh uniquely blends musical tradition with a clear vision for the future. As the guardian of the West African Griot tradition, she stands in a centuries-old line of storytellers and musicians and is also regarded as an innovative voice of the present. With her virtuosic kora playing and expressive singing, she reaches a global audience – despite the conscious decision to sing in her own languages and work independently. Her international live performances take her to renowned stages from London to Paris to New York, captivating a steadily growing audience. Besides her musical career, Jobarteh is deeply committed to social change. With the Gambia Academy she founded, she aims to rethink education in Africa and firmly embed cultural identity in the curriculum. Her current album "Badinyaa Kumoo" ("Words of Unity") marks another artistic milestone. In it, she addresses current social issues and uses her music as a powerful medium for messages of solidarity and responsibility.
