Son of the Velvet Rat – a name like out of a noir novel, a music like the soundtrack to exactly that. Georg Altziebler sings as if Leonard Cohen had forgotten his voice in the desert sands of California. It's about atmosphere, stories, loneliness that isn't sad but strangely comforting, located somewhere between Americana, noise influences, and dark folk. Lucinda Williams, a fan and collaborator on the album “Red Chamber Music,” once called Georg’s voice “great and sexy-gravelly,” woven with Heike’s “translucent harmonies, like desert roses circling a tattooed heart.” Live, the duo is characterized by remarkable variety and dynamism. Heike plays, in addition to various keyboard instruments, percussion. The range extends from fragile neo-folk chanson to rough garage rock. Son of the Velvet Rat are currently touring with songs from the “Red Barn Sessions” and their latest album “Ghost Ranch” (Fluff & Gravy Records/ 2024). Both releases were recorded at the Red Barn Recorders studio in the Californian desert. Notable guests include, among others, the illustrious Marc Ribot on guitar, Jolie Holland as backing vocalist and violinist, or Jay Bellerose and Danny Frankel on drums. Nonetheless, the instrumentation is as sparse and transparent as never before with SotVR.
