The northern hemisphere is in its annual hibernation, people sleep peacefully in their apartments. But Isa awakens and cannot fall back asleep. According to the rules, she must leave her boyfriend Theo behind and is taken to a hotel that she and the few other early risers are not allowed to leave. Surrounded by the sleeping world, the hotel is a bleak place, and Isa increasingly retreats into an immersive computer game. What begins as a fascinating expedition to Mars soon becomes threatening, and Isa faces the question of whether she has long since lost control over what happens to her in the AI-regulated reality. Isa must grow beyond herself and decide how she wants to live. Today, she teaches physics and lives with her husband and child in Zurich. "The Memory of Unknown Cities" is her first novel.
