A unique and festive experience can be a visit to the unique Slav Epic of Alfons Mucha at the castle in Moravský Krumlov. A total of 20 large-format canvases represent the history of the Slavic nations and the most significant historical milestones, which touch not only the past of the Czechs. This world-famous work is accessible year-round in the reconstructed castle halls. Due to high public interest, however, we recommend reserving timed tickets in advance. Since 2022, the Slav Epic is accompanied by the so-called "Mucha Trail" – a project of the Mucha Foundation, which annually brings thematic exhibitions of his own works or contemporary works inspired by Alfons Mucha's artistic style to places associated with his life and work. Moravský Krumlov is part of this project every year, which you can view as part of the Slav Epic tour included in the price of one ticket. In 2024, the exhibition was complemented by "Mucha's Stairs". The original structure on which Alfons Mucha painted the monumental canvases of the Slav Epic for 18 years. It is said he stood on them for 8 to 10 hours a day. Their owner is Jaroslav Pácha, the current owner of Zbiroh Castle, where Mucha painted the entire cycle. He kindly lent them to Moravský Krumlov – he wanted them to be back where the Slav Epic is. A new feature in 2024 is also films about the life of the world-famous artist. Visitors have the opportunity to watch Czech documentary films that provide a deeper insight into the life and work of Alfons Mucha. These short documentaries can be comfortably watched for free in the cloakroom foyer, on the ground floor at the entrance to the exhibition. For young visitors, a modified guided tour and a special worksheet with a puzzle have been available since 2024. When they solve it correctly, it leads them to a secret place in the castle, where a reward awaits them in a chest. You can expand your tour of the famous painting cycle at the castle in Moravský Krumlov with other cultural experiences: a visit to the modern art exhibitions from the collections of Jan and Meda Mládková from Prague's Museum Kampa, a guided tour of the castle interiors as part of the "Noble Chambers" circuit, or climb the castle lookout tower, which was opened after extensive reconstruction of the entire southern wing of the castle in 2022. The modern exhibition titled "Through the Tunnel to the 20th Century" with emotional stories about the history of the town and the castle is also worth a visit. It is located in a tunnel that originally served as an access road to the town.
