The French-Algerian trumpeter Shems Bendali lives in Switzerland and develops deeply narrative, sensitive music. In his current project, Bendali designs a fascinating sci-fi universe between North Africa and the Middle East, inspired by the aesthetics of futuristic comics. It is more than just a sequence of pieces – it is a world of its own, ranging from intimate contemplative moments to overwhelming vastness. Through his music, Shems Bendali explores his multifaceted identity in the tension between the West and the Arab world. Similar to the writer Amin Maalouf, he refuses to choose only one homeland – instead, he transforms this in-between space into a field full of creative power. He is now bringing his music exclusively for the SJO into a big band context for the first time. An evening full of world premieres awaits us.
