Donny McCaslin needs no introduction to the discerning SJO audience. In 2019, the SJO first met him during a week-long collaboration at the Bern Jazz Festival, which offered everything from energetic, highly intense concert evenings to epic mini-golf tournaments. Now, the star tenor saxophonist is back with new music, freshly arranged for big band. McCaslin has been active since the early 90s as a band member and celebrated soloist on the major jazz stages, for example with Gary Burton, Steps Ahead, or the Maria Schneider Orchestra. His voice on the saxophone is unmistakable, characterized by architectural precision and electrifying power. After David Bowie heard a concert of his quartet, he engaged the band for his last album "Blackstar," released in 2016. Since then, McCaslin has pursued a consistent version of art-jazz-rock as a composer, or as one of his Grammy-nominated pieces is called: "Stadium Jazz."
