Description

Thumb-sucking despite prohibition – snap, snap, the thumb is gone. Refusing to eat – your own fault, then death will come for you. Playing with fire secretly and not paying attention? – Bad luck, only a red shoe survived. All these disobedient children who dawdle, dream, defy, and break rules – they all meet a terrible end. Heinrich Hoffmann's "Struwwelpeter" first appeared in 1845 and is one of the most successful and controversial German children's books. Characters like "Suppen-Kasper" and "Zappel-Philipp" have become fixed terms. The British pop group "The Tiger Lillies" has turned this notorious children's book into a junk opera for adults, stylistically in the tradition of Brecht and Weill's music. With eerily beautiful ballads, lively Eastern European sounds, and black humor, they push the stories of these naughty children to the anarchic extreme.
