Description

Discreet, almost invisible life forms inhabit decaying leaves and hidden corners of the natural world. In Secrets of Nature, a pioneering series directed by Percy Smith and Mary Field, nature becomes a spectacle through revolutionary filmmaking techniques: macro photography, accelerated, slow-motion, and microscopic shots. These images transform ordinary phenomena — plant growth, insect metamorphoses, microscopic worlds — into fascinating apparitions where science and wonder blend. Nearly a century after their creation, this cine-concert seeks to reactivate the sensitive power of these films through sound. The music reveals the hidden rhythms of life, amplifies imperceptible movements, and opens a new listening space between image and sound material. Created by Stanislas Pili and Miguel Angel Garcia Martin in collaboration with four soloists from the Nouvel Ensemble Contemporain (NEC), the project becomes a laboratory where early scientific cinema and contemporary sound practices meet. Developed in collaboration with Plan 9 – Les Étranges Nuits du Cinéma, it offers a new voice to these images, in a performative experience where the mystery of life meets current musical creation.
