Description
In 1431, Albanian bishops were invited to a council in Basel – the historically documented beginning of centuries-long contacts between Switzerland and the Albanian-speaking region, which continue to the present day. The lecture covers the printing of a work by Marin Barleti in Basel in 1556, Albanian and Swiss mercenaries in northern Italy from the 15th century, the travel writer Dora d’Istria, the Geneva anthropologist Eugène Pittard, the hesitant Swiss recognition of the Republic of Albania, Swiss mistrust of Enver Hoxha, guest workers from Yugoslavia, Swiss development aid, official diplomatic relations, and the Albanian diaspora in Switzerland as the connective tissue of the present.
