The artistic development of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra culminates this season prominently in the late Romantic repertoire. But this repertoire not only points forward – to modernity and the future of the orchestra – but also back to strong traditions. Richard Wagner's "Siegfried Idyll" reminds us that Romanticism itself made history in Lucerne: the work was created in Tribschen as a personal gift to Cosima Wagner. In Brahms' Fourth Symphony, the tradition goes even further back – to Bach. Gently undulating melancholy, passionate tones of longing, warm cantilenas, and a cheerfully pointed grotesque lead to a finale based on a Baroque compositional model: a chaconne with a strict, almost chorale-like character. Benjamin Britten's Double Concerto for Violin and Viola also looks back and forward at the same time. In this vital early work, the interplay between solo instruments and orchestra recalls the joy of playing of the concerto grosso – fresh, agile, and full of energy. With Vilde Frang and Lawrence Power, two outstanding soloists are at the center. On the podium, Diego Ceretta fulfills the career promise that was already evident in his earlier appearance as a Rising Star of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra. Cast
