Description

In this format, Berlin-based groups whose work is based on Brazilian musical traditions introduce themselves. This year, it features Banda Furiosa, mainly known for their long-standing presence in the Carnival of Cultures, Dudu Tucci's project Afoxé Berlin, and the hosts Terra Brasilis. Complementing Samba Made in Berlin is 'Faces Ocultas,' a contemporary dance company from Brazil. They will present themselves here for the first time in Germany. Program: Friday, November 6, 7:30 PM

Banda Furiosa Faces Ocultas – Contemporary dance from Brazil
The award-winning Brazilian dance company Faces Ocultas from Salto, São Paulo, combines contemporary dance with socially relevant themes. The focus is on exploring the 'hidden faces' of humans and their socio-cultural environment. With expressive choreography, impressive body language, and great emotional power, the company tells stories of identity, resistance, cultural diversity, and social change. In addition to international performances and festival participations, Faces Ocultas is involved in numerous social and cultural projects. Moça Bonita – A tribute to Elza Soares
In 'Moça Bonita,' Faces Ocultas honors the extraordinary life and work of the Brazilian music icon Elza Soares (1930–2022). The choreography narrates her rise from poverty and violence to an internationally celebrated voice of Samba, Soul, and Brazilian pop music. Dance and body become expressions of strength, self-determination, and resilience. The audience is invited to discover their own potential, follow their own path, and celebrate the power and independence of women. Donos da Terra – The Lords of the Land
'Donos da Terra' is dedicated to the history and cultural significance of Brazil's indigenous peoples. The company recalls their deep connection with nature, their rich traditions, and their cultural wealth. At the same time, the piece tells of colonization, oppression, and the ongoing struggle for rights, identity, and cultural self-determination. Participating both on stage and directly in the audience, Banda Furiosa takes part in major events such as IFA, the Berlin Marathon, the International Children's Festival, the Carnival of Cultures, or the 'Fete de la Musique' every year. With their original music and dance performances, the band creates a great atmosphere. Their passionate joy of making music is overwhelming and contagious to the audience; their animation makes people laugh and participate. Since the band operates without electric amplifiers and systems, the musicians can move freely in the space and perform at different locations, directly reaching the audience. Dudu Tuccis Afoxé Berlin
Terra Brasilis
Dudu Tucci, percussion master and pioneer of Afro-Brazilian rhythms in Europe, presents a purely percussion repertoire with his band Afoxé Berlin and guests. Afoxé Berlin, Dudu Tucci, and guests bring the Afro-Brazilian rhythm culture from Salvador da Bahia to the stage. With compositions by Dudu Tucci, they combine traditional grooves, powerful percussion, and contemporary arrangements into an exciting concert experience. Dudu Tucci followed an invitation to the JazzFest Berlin over 40 years ago. Since then, he has lived and worked in Berlin—as a musician, composer, and sought-after teacher of Brazilian percussion. As a soloist and with his bands Afoxé Berlin and Brazil Power Drums, Dudu has thrilled audiences at international festivals and concert stages worldwide—from Mexico to South Korea and Morocco. The ufaFabrik is the home of Terra Brasilis, which has a history of over 38 years. Under the direction of Manfred Spaniol, the musicians mainly perform original compositions based on Brazilian percussion grooves. Terra Brasilis has appeared at many international festivals, traveled through Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Brazil, and Cambodia. They have played at numerous large-scale and cultural events and have made a name for themselves worldwide with their versatile repertoire.
