On the handling of sexualized violence by the Catholic Church and the ambivalent role of church criminal law The Catholic Church has been and still is an institution where sexualized violence has occurred to a significant extent and continues to do so in some cases. A central role in addressing this issue is played by church criminal law: for a long time, it was applied only selectively or was completely ignored, thus becoming part of the problem itself. The lecture analyzes the ambivalent role of church criminal law: can it today promote transparency, responsibility, and justice – or does it remain a tool for safeguarding church power?
