Description

One of the most heartfelt religious celebrations in Mendrisiotto is dedicated to the Blessed Manfredo, a nobleman from Settala (Milan) who lived as a hermit on Monte San Giorgio. After his death on January 27, 1217, his remains were placed in Riva San Vitale, where they are displayed for prayer every year during the feast. His effigy can be found in the Baptistery of Riva San Vitale. He is attributed with several graces, evidenced by the ex-votos hanging in the church, and also the miracle of turning stones into bread during a period of famine. In memory of that episode, tradition holds that blessed bread is distributed among the villagers every year. The festival takes place in Riva San Vitale, usually on the last Sunday of January, for time immemorial. In addition to venerating the saint's tomb, it was customary in the past to stop at the forgiveness stand, where occasion cookies were sold in front of the church.
